2025 Field Arborist – Job Description

The Newport Tree Conservancy seeks a part-time, seasonal employee for 16 hours per week, from early May through Early November. A love for plants, trees, and nature is required. Work experience and some base knowledge of trees, plants, the natural world, and horticulture is preferred.

General Description: This is a seasonal, hourly position working to help protect, preserve, and promote Newport’s urban forest. Applicants will be working directly with trees and must be competent with basic horticultural tasks. Work will be performed hot or cold, rain or shine. 

This position’s role is to manage our Tree Corps volunteer team. Tree Corps is an NTC directed volunteer program which aims to care for and promote Newport’s urban forest within the public  open space, with assistance from the City of Newport. Tree Corps duties include weeding and mulching trees, summer and fall pruning, planting trees, and other tree care duties. The field arborist supervises and instructs volunteers to engage safely in these activities. Other responsibilities include duties such as watering newly planted trees around Newport, assisting with tree tagging, recording information into our tree cataloging software, assisting with programs and events, and teaching the public about trees.

Tree Corps. duties include:

  • Supervision and instruction of volunteers

  • Weeding and mulching of public space trees

  • Cutting mulch circles

  • Driving truck and trailer

  • Tree planting

  • Maintenance Pruning

Other duties:

  • Watering newly planted trees (operation of pump and water tank)

  • General nursery (repotting, watering, weeding, tree-training)

  • Evaluating public tree health

  • Tree tagging (installation and removal)

  • Assisting with programing (classes, walks, workshops)

  • Learning/enhancing tree I.D. Knowledge


The Field Arborist will report to, and be supervised by the Living Collections Manager. Reporting locations will be the NTC offices (Redwood Annex) or in the field around Newport. The application process will require a background check, proof of a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record.
